Lifelong Hempfield resident Jay Anderson is vying for a seat on the township’s Board of Supervisors.

“I am running for Hempfield supervisor because I enjoy being involved in the community and I get personal satisfaction from it,” Anderson, 55, wrote via email.

This is Anderson’s first time running for supervisor, but his involvement in the township predates this candidacy. He is currently secretary of the township’s Zoning Hearing Board and chairman of Westmoreland County Republican Committee’s fifth district. He is also involved in the township’s Steering Committee and the Boy Scouts of America Laurel Hills district.

Previously, Anderson served on the township’s planning commission and the Hempfield Band Parent Association.

If elected supervisor, Anderson said he hopes to support planned growth to maintain low taxes, ensure the preservation of Hempfield’s volunteer fire departments, and support recreational opportunities for families.

Anderson works as a real estate appraiser and attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He lives in Hempfield with his wife, Debbie.

He is running on the Republican ticket.

Two supervisor seats on the five-person board are up for grabs in this year’s election.

Supervisors George Reese and John Silvis’s terms expire in December 2023. Reese has announced he will run for reelection, and township safety officer and volunteer firefighter Michael Wolford is running, too.

Supervisors serve six-year terms.

The primary election is May 16.
