Learn, shop, sip, stroll, listen and enjoy at all of these summer events around Westmoreland County this weekend. It’s time to take a break and kick back.
The Stroll
Summer is a great time for nostalgia, so hop back to the mid-20th century with The Stroll. This oldies-themed event will take place at the Diamond in Ligonier’s business district.
The event will include oldies music to get your hips swaying and your fingers snapping, vintage cars cruising through the business district and DJ Zoo Productions getting you dancing all night long. More than 200 cars are expected.
Get out that poodle skirt and head on down to Ligonier from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday. To learn more, visit ligonier.com.
The Carpenters tribute
The voice of Karen Carpenter is one of the most evocative and iconic in pop music history. The Carpenters created timeless hit songs including “Close To You” and “We’ve Only Just Begun.” Now, tribute band Top of the World (another amazing Carpenters song) will be bringing these songs to life at the Lamp Theatre.
Top of the World will play all of the band’s most famous ballads while sharing fun facts and history about the band’s process. This is a can’t-miss experience for any fan of 1970s music.
The show will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the Lamp Theatre, 222 Main St., Irwin. Tickets are $49. Learn more at lamptheatre.org.
Sunday Fun Day: Animal Kingdom
In August, the theme of the Westmoreland Museum of American Art’s monthly Sunday Fun Day program is “Animal Kingdom.” This event will be full of fun activities, but it also will be educational.
In addition to food trucks, a petting zoo and several art activities, patrons will get the chance to meet naturalists and authors who will teach about native plant and animal species in Pennsylvania. There will be pet caricatures, community information tables and an animal-themed activity inside the Museum’s Art Maze.
The event will last from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Westmoreland Museum of American Art, 221 N. Main St., Greensburg. The event is free, but register ahead at thewestmoreland.org.
Community carnival
The Loyalhanna Watershed Association will be hosting a community carnival Saturday and Sunday. The carnival will be a fun event for good causes that support the area.
The carnival will include food for purchase, lots of games, plus vendor booths so you can do some shopping as well. Then there will be the cookie contest — where local bakers can show off their skills and try to win prizes — and relay races.
The event will be held from 3 until 7 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Loyalhanna Watershed Association, 6 Old Lincoln Highway West, Ligonier Township. Learn more at loyalhannawatershed.org.
SummerSounds
North Carolina-based The Awen Family Band will have something for everyone at Friday’s edition of the SummerSounds free concert series. The musical collective draws from a world’s worth of musical styles and traditions, with zydeco, bluegrass, boogie, Afrobeats and much more. This vibrant blend of styles will please the crowd.
Preshow music from Kristen Beard will begin at 6:15 p.m. and the main event will begin at 7 p.m. at St. Clair Park, 135 N. Maple Ave.. Greensburg.
