Here are 5 things to do in Westmoreland this weekend: Feb. 21-23
It might seem like your average weekend in Westmoreland County, but don’t be fooled — there are plenty of can’t-miss events happening this weekend only. Here are some fun options.
ABBA Tribute at the Lamp Theatre
There will be something in the air Saturday night at the Lamp Theatre in Irwin, with this poppy tribute to the red-hot 1970s Swedish pop group ABBA.
“Mamma Mania!” is New York’s premier ABBA tribute band, and members will turn you into a “dancing queen” with their costumes, harmonies and moves. Make sure to sing along to all of your favorite hits by this iconic group.
The show will be held at 8 p.m. at the Lamp Theatre, 222 Main St., Irwin. Tickets are $30. To grab yours, head over to lamptheatre.org.
YMCA Family Fun Night
Valentine’s Day may have passed, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to forget the heart — February is still National Heart Month. The Greensburg YMCA will be emphasizing the health of this vital organ at its monthly Family Fun Night.
Friday night, the whole family can enjoy heart-themed crafts, healthy and tasty snacks and great family activities that will keep your blood pumping (a little bit of aerobic exercise is great for the heart). There also will be a representative from Independence Health System’s Heart Program at the event.
Family Fun Night is free for members, $5 for non-members and $15 for the whole family. The event will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Greensburg YMCA, 101 S. Maple Ave., Greensburg. Learn more at facebook.com/gbgymca.
‘The Laramie Project’ at the Theatre Factory
This weekend, The Theatre Factory will bring to life this stark, real-life collage of stories, “The Laramie Project.” The play centers around the response to the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, a gay student at the University of Wyoming.
Directed by Matt Mlynarski (with associate director Rebekah Little), this production will run this weekend and next. The 2000 play pulls together firsthand accounts, from interviews to news reports, from the community of Laramie, Wyo.
Performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Trafford Performing Arts Center, 235 Cavitt Ave., Trafford. To get $20 tickets, visit thetheatrefactory.org.
Collage-making ‘craftivity’
Love making collages? Join this activity afternoon at Green Beacon Gallery to cut stuff up and make it into new stuff. They’ll provide some materials, but feel free to bring your own — for your own project or to share.
The event will run from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday. In addition to books, magazines and any other media that you want to cut up and reinvent, you can bring along food and beverages — including BYOB for those 21+. Admission is free.
Green Beacon Gallery is located at 235 W. Pittsburgh St., Greensburg. Learn more at greenbeacongallery.com.
Eddie Steen and the Jailhouse Rockers Band
Do you love The King but never got the chance to see him live? Check out this Elvis tribute band this weekend to bring the magic of Elvis Presley back to life.
With a lasting legacy of legendary tunes and performances, Elvis Presley is one of the most often impersonated musicians in the world. This faithful tribute will have two performances Saturday, one at 3 p.m. and one at 7 p.m. Both shows will be held at the Greensburg Garden and Civic Center, 951 Old Salem Road, Greensburg. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door.
