Here are 5 things to do in Westmoreland this weekend: Oct. 4-6
Welcome to October, when the weekends are full of football, pumpkin carving and Halloween costume-making. In between, there’s plenty of fun to be had at local events. Here are a few suggestions.
Apple ’n Arts Festival
This weekend will be jam-packed with live music and fun at the Delmont Apple ’n Arts Festival. Running Saturday and Sunday at Shield’s Farm in Salem, the festival will fill up both days with lots to do.
A full schedule of live music for both days will soundtrack your festival trip. Activities will include face painting, train rides, a maze and apple slingshots. The Fort Allen Antique Farm Equipment Association will conduct demonstrations and sell a variety of products, such as cornmeal and apple cider. It will also feature tractor parades and pulls.
The event will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. See the full slate of performers and get directions at delmontapplenarts.com.
Creepy caboose
Something spooky’s happening this Saturday at the Darlington Train Station, 3032 Idlewild Hill Lane, Ligonier Township. The sixth annual Creepy Caboose event is perfect for kids and adults alike.
Attendees will hear (friendly) ghost stories around a campfire and get to participate in face painting, touring the Ligonier Rail Road Museum’s historic bobber caboose and nifty demonstrations. There will also be a food truck round-up.
The event is free and will go from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday. Learn more at the Ligonier Valley Rail Road Museum’s Facebook page (facebook.com/LVRRA).
Puppets and Performance
Be one of the first to see You Are Here’s new exhibit, Puppets and Performance. The opening is this Saturday at 6 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
The exhibit is a close-up look at the magic of puppets, from their creation to their animation in dramatic ways by way of puppeteers. It features pieces from artists Tom Sarver, Joann Kielar, Lindsay Goranson and others.
You Are Here is at 406 Clay Ave., Jeannette. To get the full picture, visit yah406clay.org.
Wingfest
Crazy about chicken wings? This is the event for you. From 1 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Live Casino will host Wingfest, an opportunity for local purveyors of this delicious food to compete for Top Wing.
The fiery festival is $5 per ticket, with kids under 12 gaining entry for free. Local beer and wine vendors will be on hand to quench burning mouths. There will be live music as well.
Wingfest will be held at Live Casino, 5260 Route 30, Hempfield. Get tickets and info at pittsburgh.livecasinohotel.com.

Learn the ghostly legends of Ligonier in the Diamond Theatre at the Ligonier Historic Ghost Walk Tours available weekends throughout October. They’re kicking off this weekend with start times of 7 and 8 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
