Events

• White Valley AMVETS and Murrysville American Legion Post 711 will host Veterans Day activities throughout Murrysville, Export and Delmont on Nov. 9.

They are: 9 a.m. at Eastview Union Cemetery, Cemetery Road, Delmont; 9:15 a.m. honor roll at the Delmont borough building, 77 Greensburg St.; 9:30 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church cemetery, 101 Church St., in Delmont; 10:15 honor roll at the Export war memorial off Washington Avenue; 10:30 a.m. dedication of the newly moved honor rolls at Murrysville Community Park on Wiestertown Road; 11:15 a.m. honor roll at the AMVETS on Carolina Street.

A veterans lunch will follow at the AMVETS post.

• The National Park Service will host a Veterans Day event at the Fort Necessity National Battlefield on Nov. 9 and 10.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., park staff and volunteers will display a military timeline of service, from the 18th to the early 20th century. The free program includes a display of equipment, camp life and weapons demonstrations.

The fort is at 1 Washington Parkway in Farmington.

• Ret. Col. Kenneth Gongaware, a Norwin High School graduate, will be the keynote speaker at the Veterans Day observance at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 at J. Howard Snyder Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 781 on Billot Avenue, North Huntingdon.

The VFW Post honor guard will participate in the ceremonies.

• The American Legion Post 33 at 216 Cavitt Ave., Trafford, will hold its Veterans Day ceremonies from 10:45 to 11:30 a.m. Nov. 11.

The Trafford Middle School chorus, the Penn-Trafford High School marching band and the Yough Chorale will perform at the ceremonies.

• The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg will host its annual wreath ceremony at 11:11 a.m. Nov. 11 at the flag poles in front of Chambers Hall. The keynote speaker will be State Rep. Eric Nelson, R-Hempfield, who is a Marine veteran.

Following the ceremony, veterans and their families are invited to a luncheon hosted by Phi Eta Sigma, the national freshman honor society. It will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Hempfield Room at Chambers Hall.

The campus is at 150 Finoli Drive in Hempfield.

• Westmoreland County Judge Tim Krieger, who was a lieutenant in the Navy, will be the keynote speaker at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 33 at 516 E Pittsburgh St., Greensburg, at ceremonies that will begin at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 11.

The VFW Post honor guard will fire a 21-gun salute. A luncheon will be served at noon for VFW members and guests.

• The American Legion Post 981 at 1301 Broad St., South Greensburg, will celebrate Veterans Day with a luncheon at 1 p.m. Nov. 11.

Veteran offers, discounts

• Grandma’s Country Oven Bake Shoppe will give away 125 8-inch pumpkin pies for veterans.

Call to reserve a pie at 724-744-9873.

The shop is at 1004 Blank Road in Penn Township.

• McDonald’s restaurants will offer a meal to veterans with a valid military ID on Nov. 11.

For breakfast, veterans can receive a sausage egg McMuffin meal with a hash brown and beverage. For lunch or dinner, they can receive a free 10-piece Chicken McNugget meal, with a medium french fry and any size soft drink, tea or coffee.

• Eat’n Park restaurants will offer a 10% discount for military personnel and their families for the entire month of November.

On Nov. 11, all active and former military will receive a free Smiley cookie along with the discount. Proof of service is required.

• Hoss’s Steak and Sea House will offer free soup, salad, bread, nachos and dessert bar on Nov. 11. In addition, veterans will receive a voucher for $10 off any bill of $40 or more on a future November visit.

Proof of service is required.
