The Westmoreland County Housing Authority is moving ahead with a $450,000 project to tap into public sewage lines for a small community in Sewickley Township.

Executive director Michael Washowich said the authority plans to close a small sewage treatment plant it owns at the Shaner Heights complex and connect sewage lines to those run by the Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County. The plant serves about 16 units owned by the authority off Mars Hill Road and 11 more nearby owned by Homes Build Hope.

Washowich said the authority got a $375,000 grant from Westmoreland County to put toward the work. The remainder of the cost will be paid by the authority.

There won’t be any disruption for customers, said Erik Spiegel, director of architecture and engineering. Officials are in the midst of the planning process and will have to submit information to the state Department of Environmental Protection.

Spiegel said the board could approve bids in the next couple months with work potentially starting early next year.
