Busy workers and shoppers have a new on-the-go lunch option in downtown Greensburg.

Iceburgh’s Express opened June 12 at 15 E. Pittsburgh St., offering create-your-own salads and wraps, along with pre-made wraps, snacks, cookies and beverages.

It’s the second Iceburgh’s venture for Skip and Alicia Majiros of North Huntingdon, who opened the eat-in Iceburgh’s Bistro in Irwin in 2017.

The pared-down Express brings the “best of the best” from the Bistro to the new location, Skip Majiros said. It has the same emphasis on fresh and healthy foods, green-and-black color scheme and images of Skippy, the penguin mascot.

For $7.95, diners can build a small salad or wrap with choice of greens, cheese, dressing and two choices from an array of vegetables, fruits and proteins. A large is $9.95.

Both sizes come with a choice from the “Munchies” containers — croutons, crispy tortilla strips, shoestring potatoes, crispy onions, dried cranberries, almond slivers and sunflower seeds.

Other chicken salad options are available, along with Mediterranean and Shrimp Caesar salads.

Ready-made wraps are the best-sellers from the Irwin store, the chicken salad, albacore tuna salad and the “Boss” Italian wrap.

“They’re made fresh every day,” Skip Majiros said. “When they sell out, that’s it for the day. We don’t have anything sitting around in the back.”

The interior is designed to get people in and out fast.

Diners enter a space where they can grab ready-made foods and beverages and pay at the back counter. The counter is also where they order and pay for the custom-made options.

They pass through a doorway to a second space, where they move along a Chipotle-style counter, choosing their salad or wrap components as they go. Then it’s out the door at the other end.

“Our customers love seeing their food made fresh in front of them,” Skip Majiros said.

They also like the speed of the process, Alicia Majiros said.

“If your lunch break is a half-hour, you only have a half-hour,” she said.

Two parking spaces in front of the building are reserved for Iceburgh’s Express patrons.

Busy location

Prior to opening Iceburgh’s Bistro, the couple originally planned a takeout-only place in Greensburg. A real estate broker, Skip Majiros, owns the building where the Express is located.

“We wanted to do a grab-and-go in a busier city, and Greensburg is busier than Irwin,” Alicia said.

Then a friend came along with news of a really good deal on a building in Irwin, and the Bistro — with seating and a larger menu also including soup, sandwiches, subs and sides — came into being.

When the lease was up for the sub shop that formerly occupied the Greensburg space, “it was time to do it,” Skip said.

The Express has been drawing customers from the neighboring Westmoreland County Courthouse, Greensburg YMCA, shops, businesses and law offices, Skip said. It offers a 10% discount for students with a Seton Hill University ID.

It also was created as a franchisable concept.

Alicia Majiros spends most of her time at the Express, while Skip is in charge at the Bistro. Alicia’s staff includes three young women who started at the Bistro as high school sophomores and are now in college.

They are looking to hire more employees, especially those who are looking for year-round work, Skip said.

Iceburgh’s Bistro is open weekdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Full menu and online ordering are available at iceburghs.com.
