Those wanting to use the long-awaited improvements to the Spring Avenue Park in Greensburg’s Fifth Ward will only have to wait a little longer as finishing touches are being made to the playground.
Workers from the Sports and Recreation Associates of Apollo were busy Tuesday installing the rubberized playing surface around the playground equipment at the park at the corner of Spring Avenue and Grove Street. The work should be completed by Monday at the latest, said Glenn Moyer, Greensburg’s superintendent of parks and recreation. The current work at the site depends on there being dry weather, so that timetable could change if there are a few rainy days, Moyer said.
The revamping of Spring Avenue Park has been four years in the making. The city began looking at rehabbing the 1.4-acre site in 2020.
Greensburg received about $600,000 in funding for the design and the construction through the city’s Community Development Block Grant program.
Sports and Recreation Associates was awarded a $218,000 contract for new playground elements at Spring Avenue Park, including swings and slides.
There was new infrastructure installed at the park, including new walkways and an updated basketball half court.
Greensburg officials hope that recent upgrades will boost activity at the underused park at Spring Avenue and Grove Street.
Work included improvements to a basketball half court near Spring Avenue and an updated playground area farther from the street.
In addition to the Spring Avenue site, the city maintains seven other neighborhood playgrounds.
