Ahead of coronavirus, Saint Vincent College bumps up safety measures in dining areas

Saint Vincent College is bumping up safety measures in dining areas as a precaution against coronavirus, officials said Monday.

College spokesman Jim Berger said there are no suspected cases at the school located near Latrobe.

“In the interest of precaution and in an effort to reduce the number of frequently touched services, we have made these adjustments to help ensure the health and safety of our students and guests, which will always be our top priority,” Berger said.

Among the changes implemented Monday as students returned from spring break was the temporary elimination of all self-service areas in the main cafeteria, the Community Center Dining Hall. Employees will be present at each station, including the salad bar, to distribute food and utensils.

In The Shack, a smaller dining area, self-service condiment stations have been eliminated and diners will give their orders directly to a food service employee rather than writing them down on a slip of paper and handing them to workers.

The changes were made as colleges across the country weighed their options as new cases of the virus were documented across the U.S. Several colleges in coronavirus hot spots on the West Coast have canceled classes, opting to offer online lessons through the end of the spring semester.

Berger said Saint Vincent will continue to be proactive in guarding against and preparing for any potential outbreaks and will follow directives from the CDC, the WHO and local and state departments of health.
