Westmoreland County Prison officials are working to transfer a male inmate who attempted suicide Friday to Torrance State Hospital in Derry Township for mental health treatment, Warden John Walton said.

The inmate was found Friday night hanging by a bed sheet in a disciplinary cell as guards made their regular rounds, Walton said. He declined to identify the inmate.

“He had just been moved to disciplinary for assaulting another inmate,” Walton said.

The inmate was taken by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital. He was expected to be released Tuesday, Walton said.

“We’re looking to get the proper mental health treatment,” he said.
