Irwin to fix Caruthers Lane landslide
A landslide on Caruthers Lane in Irwin needs to be fixed before the road sustains more damage that could lead to closing it while it is being repaired, an engineer told borough officials this week..
The crack in Caruthers Lane, which has occurred above the Norwin Public Library, has expanded to the middle of the street, Lucien Bove, Irwin Borough engineer, told borough council on April 10.
“We need to take care of it immediately,” Bove said. “It it continues to move, it could be an emergency.”
Bove was authorized to advertise for bids to repair the landslide. He told council he would meet with a representative from Ligonier Construction Co. of Laughlintown to discuss how to resolve the problem. The engineer said the landslide is too deep to simply place a cold patch of asphalt atop the crack.
Bove told borough officials he is hopeful the work could be done without closing both lanes. To post detours and the signage required for such a task is costly, Bove said.
Bove did not offer an estimate of the cost of repairing the road.
The hillside where the crack in the roadway occurred is prone to landslides, with one occurring in 2014, Bove said.
