Irwin Borough and the Turtle Creek Watershed Association are joining forces with an event aimed at educating the public about the importance of water quality while sponsoring a rubber ducky race along a section of a Tinker’s Run tributary at Irwin Park.

Planned for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 25, the event “focuses on the importance of clean water entering our watersheds … a topic that both organizations are very passionate about,” said Shari Martino, borough manager.

It is likely that all of the stormwater runoff from private property and all the borough’s catchbasins enter the watershed, Martino said.

“It’s important for the public to learn about how they affect our water resources,” Martino said.

Educational handouts will show how stormwater catch basins operate, as well as ways to divert and reduce stormwater runoff, Martino said.

Those who want to participate in the rubber ducky race can purchase one for $5. The “owners” of the ducks that win receive a prize. Tickets are available at the Irwin Borough office, 424 Main St., and the Cheesecake Caffe, 512 Main St.

All proceeds from the event will be split between the borough and the watershed association, said Stacie Santimyer, borough assistant manager.

Those interested in being a sponsor for the race or donating can contact Martino or Santimyer. For information, contact the borough office at 724-864-3100.
