Jeannette City school board expected to hold line on taxes
Jeannette City School District board members are expected to vote on a 2020-21 budget this month that contains no property tax increase.
Business manager Paul Sroka said he recommended a 1-mill tax increase, but was directed by board members to prepare a spending plan that didn’t include it.
About $139,000 would be used from the district’s fund balance to offset a deficit in the proposed $19.8 million budget, he said. The proposed plan includes the use of $200,000 in federal funding through the CARES Act, which was established to help with emergency relief around the country during the coronavirus pandemic.
Sroka warned that property tax increases for district residents may be on the way in future years as the financial impact of the pandemic continues and less revenue is available locally and at the state level.
The 2020-21 budget includes the hiring of a new high school math teacher and purchase of a math book series. The school board approved a preliminary budget last month. That version of the spending plan is available online.
The group is set to meet Monday with a final vote coming June 22. Both meetings will start at 7 p.m. in the high school cafeteria.
