Jeannette City school directors unanimously approved a 2020-21 budget Monday that does not raise property taxes.

The $19.8 million budget includes about $139,000 from the district’s fund balance. The board voted 8-0 with Director Tim Carney absent.

The property tax rate will remain at 88 mills.

The budget includes hiring a new high school math teacher at $40,000 and buying a math book series for $63,000. It also includes $200,000 in federal funding through the CARES Act, which was established to help with emergency relief during the coronavirus pandemic.

Business manager Paul Sroka said he originally prepared a budget that included a 1-mill tax increase but was directed by board members to remove it. He warned that property tax increases for district residents may be on the way in the future because of financial impacts related to the pandemic.
