PennDOT is moving its Greensburg Driver License Center to a new location in Jeannette, beginning Tuesday.
The updated center is in a converted building at 1100 Lowry Ave. The site previously was occupied by a discount retail store.
It will offer free Wi-Fi service for customers and will feature enhanced data communication lines and environmentally friendly “green” building components.
Saturday was the last day for full driver licensing services at the Greensburg center, located at 770 E. Pittsburgh St.
The photo center at that location will remain open for a few months, but photo services also will be offered at the Jeannette facility, according to PennDOT spokesman Diego Sandino. Those in need of a photo must have a current camera card. PennDOT advised those without camera cards to renew their noncommercial license or ID online to avoid an unnecessary trip to the Greensburg center.
When they’re open
Hours for the new Jeannette center and for temporary photo services at the Greensburg location will be 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Priority times for those 60 and older are 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Those with scheduled noncommercial road tests are being notified that their testing has been moved to Jeannette.
Commercial road tests will continue to be administered by appointment only in Greensburg for a limited time.
The Jeannette center includes seven driver licensing stations and three photo stations. Its 8,500 square feet allow a large customer waiting area to accommodate social distancing, Sandino said. He added staffing will be increased at the new center.
The Jeannette facility meets federal security standards for issuing REAL ID cards over the counter.
“It will offer the same-day issuance of REAL ID,” Sandino said.
“Green” fixtures in the new center include LED lights with energy-saving controls, high-efficiency restroom faucets, an updated HVAC system and expanded recycling options for customers and staff.
These features promote “responsible environmental stewardship while ultimately saving important taxpayer dollars,” Sandino said.
In keeping with pandemic health guidelines, customers are required to wear masks within PennDOT licensing and photo centers. Work station counters are equipped with clear plastic shields to protect staff and customers, and floor markings provide guidance for social distancing.
Only the customer requiring service should enter the center, unless assistance is needed by an accompanying person.
