A 26-year-old Jeannette man died Tuesday night in a one-car crash along Route 981 in Derry Township, state police at Kiski Valley said.

Jacob Scott Mayer was pronounced dead at the scene, Westmoreland County Coroner Tim Carson said.

Police said Mayer was traveling northbound on Route 981 at a high rate of speed in a 2011 Jeep at 8:50 p.m. when his vehicle hit a guardrail along the southern side of the highway, about 750 feet north of Dorn Lane. The vehicle continued along the south shoulder of the road, hitting two utility poles, a residential fence and a fire hydrant before overturning.

Mayer was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, which occurred just south of New Alexandria. He was ejected from the vehicle.

The scene was discovered by a deputy coroner driving to the scene of another fatality in Unity, Carson said.
