Interactive signs are expected to be installed at Jeannette parks under a Leadership Westmoreland project.

Each sign will have a different activity for children that encourages them to learn about the environment around them and exercise their imaginations, said Kelli Gardner, Westmoreland County Community College director of development.

City council last week approved the request from Leadership Westmoreland. The project was presented to council by Gardner and Derrick Accipiter, manager of project engineering at Ebara Elliott Energy. The proposal is a community project requirement of the Leadership Westmoreland group that is run by the Westmoreland County Chamber of Commerce.

The group wanted to have an impact on early childhood education in Jeannette, Accipiter said.

“Our biggest focus was how can we give back to the community,” he said.

The final locations will depend on input from city officials, but the pair suggested recreation spaces in West Jeannette, Agnew Road and Altman Park. Some will be located in a garden at Mosaic Community Development Center, they said.

There will be 10 signs total spread across the locations.

They are part of the United Way’s Born Learning program that create learning and engagement activities for children and their caregivers.

Elliott will foot the bill for the project, Accipiter said. The signs could be installed this spring.

Jeannette manager Ethan Keedy said city officials will work with Leadership Westmoreland to settle on locations on city property for the signs.
