Jeannette school teachers, staff plan car parade to see students from afar
Jeannette City School District teachers and staff members will get to see some of their students in person Saturday for the first time in six weeks.
A car parade will wind through the city as an opportunity for district employees to see students, albeit from a safe distance. The parade will start at 11 a.m. on Pennsylvania Boulevard and continue onto Park Street by McKee Stadium. It will travel through town, into West Jeannette, onto Route 130, past city hall and back to the junior-senior high school complex.
Schools across Pennsylvania were ordered to be closed March 13 in an effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus. It was a decision by Gov. Tom Wolf that was unexpected by many district officials.
The initial order, a closure of 10 school days, has since been extended to the entire academic year. Some districts started distance learning opportunities for students during the closure.
Students and their families are invited to wave to teachers and staff members, or write messages in sidewalk chalk or on signs, as they pass while maintaining a safe distance from others in the community. A detailed parade route is available on the district’s Facebook page below:.
