Jeannette Police Department is hoping for some help from the community to win a grant to benefit its canine units.

The department is in the running to receive a grant from crime scene clean up company Aftermath. The winner will be based on vote totals online and through social media.

Diesel, a Belgian Malinois, works with Sgt. Jim Phillips in the city’s department. They are fundraising to buy a second police dog vehicle so Officer Matthew Painter’s Dutch shepherd Kilo can get back on the streets. Painter was permitted to keep Kilo when he switched departments in 2021.

Chief Donald Johnston Jr. said the grant, if awarded, would be put toward getting Kilo back to work.

The contest allows for three votes each day per device through June 5 at the following locations:

aftermath.com/k9grant, search for the department and click “Vote.”

facebook.com/aftermathcares, like the page and comment “City of Jeannette Police Dept., Jeannette PA” on the daily K9 Grant post.

• instagram.com under @aftermathk9grant, follow the page and like and comment “City of Jeannette Police Dept., Jeannette PA” on the daily K9 Grant post.

Winners will be announced June 7.
