Jeannette is looking for someone to fill the treasurer’s role after the winner of the elected position didn’t meet the requirements for the job, said city manager Ethan Keedy.

The top write-in vote-getter during November’s election didn’t secure a bond or complete an online exam by Jan. 19, two weeks after the city’s reorganization meeting, Keedy said.

Jeannette’s previous treasurer, Jake Milliron, didn’t have his name on the ballot but he came in second for write-in votes. Keedy said Milliron was an “elite example” of a municipal treasurer and was regularly at city hall to collect payments and meet with residents.

“That’s not required of the position,” Keedy said, but it is recommended that the treasurer is available to take payments and answer resident questions. The treasurer is responsible for doing end of year reports, distributing and collecting sanitation bills and payments, making deposits and handling property assessment changes, among other duties.

Keedy said the treasurer is paid a percentage of collections for the city, school district and county, typically amounting to about $30,000 annually combined.

Anyone interested in filling the role will have to get a bond, or insurance, and take the exam through the state within 14 days of being appointed.

“They have to take a treasurer’s exam to get qualified to become a municipal treasurer,” Keedy said. “It kind of just showcases the position and educates them on what’s all required, the filings and all that.”

Information on how to apply will be posted on Jeannette’s website at cityofjeannette.com.
