Congressman John Joyce

U.S. Rep. John Joyce, R-Blair County, appears poised to win a second term in office.

On Wednesday afternoon, Joyce held a commanding lead over Democrat Todd Rowley of Donegal Township in Westmoreland County. According to unofficial results with more than 92% of state precincts reporting, Joyce received nearly 78% of the vote in the district that includes 10 counties and stretches eastward from Unity Township in Westmoreland County to Gettysburg in Adams County.

Formed in 2018, the district is overwhelmingly red. Nearly 60% of registered voters are Republicans, with Democrats accounting for only 28%. District voters supported President Donald Trump by about 42 percentage points in 2016.

Joyce worked as a physician prior to his political career and campaigned on a pro-life platform that also included opposition to gun control measures and support for the president’s immigration policies. He said he wants to abolish the Affordable Care Act and would back legislation to expand access to high-speed internet.

Rowley, 56, a native of Meyersdale in Somerset County and moved to Westmoreland County after a 17-year career in the FBI. He works as a ranger at Linn Run State Park and his congressional bid was his first run for public office. During the campaign, Rowley and criticized Joyce for what he called inaction in responding to the coronavirus pandemic.
