Latrobe officials canceled the community’s annual Fourth of July Celebration, citing concerns about holding large gatherings because of the coronavirus pandemic.
One of the largest events in the city, stretching over multiple days, the celebration marked its 50th anniversary last year. In addition to a parade, activities have included a foot race, midway attractions, a Miss Fourth of July pageant, musical entertainment and a fireworks display.
This year’s event would have introduced a new chapter in the tradition, as longtime organizer Carol Greenawalt retired and was succeeded by three new co-chairs: John Brasile, Latrobe’s fire chief; Beth Straka, community service officer with the Latrobe Police Department; and Ann Powell, the city’s code and zoning officer and head of the new stormwater management department.
“Many months of planning and fundraising are needed to execute a successful celebration,” the trio said Thursday in a press release. “These efforts came to a standstill in early March, when the governor put a stay-at-home order in place for Westmoreland County.
“At this time, it is impossible to predict when social gatherings of this size will continue as a normal life event.”
Plans now are to reintroduce the celebration in 2021. Fundraising events for the celebration have been postponed until they can be safely held.
Details will be announced as they are confirmed.
The co-chairs added that “2020 will forever be remembered for life-changing events, adjustments and modifications. We will overcome! We are strong! We are Latrobe!”
