Volunteers prepared enough pancakes and sausages to serve an expected 120 guests Tuesday at the fourth annual Mardi Gras dinner at St. John the Evangelist Church in Latrobe.

This year, the Catholic congregation invited members of a partner parish, St. Rose of Derry Township, to partake of the pre-Lenten festivities.

Four traditional king cakes were served, with the lucky guest who uncovered a baked-in baby figurine collecting a prize. There were drawings for other prizes and to select this year’s Mardi Gras king and queen.

The children attending snacked on nachos and tested their skills at word games and a bean bag toss.

Preceding the dinner, palm fronds saved from last year’s Palm Sunday observance were burned to provide ashes for distribution to the faithful on the following day, Ash Wednesday.
