A Latrobe man was killed late Monday when state police said the vehicle in which he was a passenger hit an embankment in Wilkinsburg.

Troopers said Michael N. Zappone, 47, was a passenger in a Jeep Cherokee being driven by David A. Whitlatch, 32, of Waynesburg. The SUV was seen at 9:39 p.m. sitting on the left shoulder of the Parkway East on-ramp from Route 30.

A witness told police the Jeep accelerated suddenly, crossed the road and hit the embankment before flipping on its roof. Zappone was taken to AHN Forbes Hospital in Monroeville where he died, according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner.

Whitlatch was taken to UPMC Presbyterian in Oakland for treatment of serious injuries.
