Many Latrobe recreational facilities operated by the Latrobe-GLSD Parks and Recreation are opening to the public today as the area moves into the relaxed “green” phase of covid-19 restrictions.

The Latrobe Farmers Market season will open Tuesday at Legion Keener Park, with precautions in place against potential spread of the virus.

Efforts remain under way to prepare the nearby Rogers-McFeely Memorial Pool for public swimming, according to Craig Shevchik, recreation director.

Playgrounds and volleyball and basketball courts will be open for use today, but visitors will be asked to follow health guidelines from the Pennsylvania Recreation and Park Society, Shevchik said. That includes maintaining a distance of 6 feet from others and staying at home when experiencing symptoms of illness.

“It’s all about social distancing,” he said.

The season-opener for the weekly Tuesday farmers market is set for noon to 4 p.m. It’s happening two weeks later than usual, Shevchik said, because the area was still in the “yellow” covid-19 phase during the original opening date, with more restrictions on social and business activities.

Precautions will be in place for market vendors and shoppers, with everyone asked to wear face coverings.

Vendors will be required to wear gloves and to provide bags for purchases since visitors will be asked not to bring their own shopping bags. Pets should be left at home.

Food may not be consumed at the market site.

Vendor stalls will be spaced 10 feet apart. A barrier will keep shoppers at a distance from stalls, but still close enough “so they can see what the vendors have, and it’s easy enough for them to exchange goods and money,” Shevchik said.

Shoppers will follow a one-way path past the stalls, with hand sanitizer stations positioned at the entrance and exit.

For the opening day, Shevchik said, vendor fees of $10 per space rental and $5 for electrical service will be waived.

“Vendors don’t have to pay the first time to help them get off the ground,” he said. “We want to serve the vendors and the shoppers the best and safest way we can.”

Reservations are available for pavilions at Legion Keener, Cardinal and Creekside parks but must be made in person at the Latrobe-GLSD Parks and Recreation office in the Latrobe City municipal building at Jefferson and Main streets.

The office will reopen to the public next week with limited hours, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays. Those visiting the office are asked to wear a face covering and practice social distancing.
