Ligonier inmate dies in Westmoreland County jail

Westmoreland County officials report that a Westmoreland County Prison inmate from Ligonier who was found unresponsive in his cell Oct. 11 had committed suicide.

Coroner Tim Carson said appears the death of Charles Madden Jr., 53, was a suicide. No foul play is suspected. A final autopsy report is pending.

Madden had been in the county jail since he was arrested by Ligonier Valley Police on Oct. 4 in Ligonier Township on charges of burglary, criminal trespass into a structure and driving under the influence.

Madden was being held in the jail without bond. He had a preliminary hearing scheduled for Wednesday morning before Derry District Judge Kelly Tua Hammers.
