Lincoln Avenue resurfacing to begin in Latrobe, Derry Township; $104K fall paving OK'd in city
Crews are slated on Thursday to begin milling a lengthy stretch of Lincoln Avenue in Latrobe and neighboring Derry Township in preparation for a joint paving project.
The work will extend between Route 982 in Derry Township and Main Street in Latrobe.
Latrobe public works director Scott Wajdic said the contractor plans to mill during the day on Thursday and Friday and then make base repairs to the street, with paving taking place during nights of the following week.
“They’re going to try to pave a section, finish it and then move forward,” Wajdic said, rather than completing work on the entire length of one lane and then completing the other lane.
The majority of the work will take place in the city. The township’s segment of Lincoln Avenue covers just about two blocks, between Route 982 (Hillview Avenue) and Station Street.
The township supervisors awarded the project contract to low bidder Derry Construction, at a cost of close to $300,000 , with about 80% assessed to the city and 20% to the township. Two additional bids ranged up to more than $365,000.
The supervisors obtained a $225,000 local share grant that is drawn from state casino revenue and also will be split between the municipalities.
“That whole section of road was starting to get pretty bad,” said Supervisor Don Kepple. “I’m glad we got the grant, putting the two municipalities together.”
“It’s been a while since it’s been done,” supervisors Chairman Jim Prohaska said of the street. “It will be a good joint project.”
Other streets
Derry Construction was approved as the lowest of five bidders when Latrobe Council on Monday awarded a fall paving project for other city streets. Those bids ranged from a little more than $104,000 to about $140,000.
The resurfacing will include portions of Carolyn Avenue, Barbara Road and Baker Hill, Railroad, Harding, Thompson and South Alexandria streets.
Wajdic said they are primarily streets that weren’t included in the recent spring paving project because gas line work was still underway there at the time.
