An Allegheny County man is being held without bail after police said he had 15 grams of crystal methamphetamine and threw items around a Dollar General store in South Greensburg last week.

Jason W. Smith, 34, of Forward Township, is charged with drug offenses and disorderly conduct.

South Greensburg police were called to the Dollar General on Huff Avenue on Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. for a report of a shoeless man who had been shoplifting but fled when he was confronted by employees, according to court papers. The man walked around the store throwing items before leaving on foot.

Police said they got a second call for the same man on Rugh Street in Greensburg, about a half mile away, walking around parked cars with his jeans around his knees. Authorities said the man matched the description of the suspect from the store and they apprehended him in a Rugh Street parking lot.

The man, identified by police as Smith, had 15 grams of crystal methamphetamine in his pocket, according to court papers. A Dollar General manager confirmed to police that Smith was the man who had been in the store.

District Judge Chris Flanigan deemed Smith a danger to the community in denying him bail, according to online court records. Smith did not have an attorney listed. He is being held at the Westmoreland County Prison. A Dec. 8 preliminary hearing is set.

Smith has several pending cases in Allegheny County court, according to online records. He is awaiting formal arraignment later this month on two cases from incidents in May in which Jefferson Hills and West Mifflin police separately accuse him of drug possession and public drunkenness, among other charges.

A pretrial conference was scheduled in November in connection with resisting arrest, drug possession and related charges filed by Elizabeth Borough police stemming from a March incident, according to court records.
