After a 2020 Memorial Day that was pared back because of covid-19 concerns, the White Valley AMVETS and local American Legions will bring back their full slate of events this year, including the rededication of the Export veterans’ memorial, recently relocated closer to the Westmoreland Heritage trail.
Work crews from Mangery Crane and Rigging and McColly Memorials in Greensburg — the company that originally moved the monument from the former Export school building to the American Legion in the 1990s — brought the 12,000-pound granite monument and base roughly a half-mile down the road on May 6. A crew from Drnjevich Concrete finished work on its new home last week.
The monument’s move is the first part of a sizable undertaking by the borough and the Export Historical Society that will also include a replica of Export’s former train station.
“We’re all very excited about all the improvements to that area downtown,” said Melanie Litz, borough councilwoman and historical society member. “It really just furthers our goal of beautifying that area and providing facilities for folks, points of interest to visit, and helping to support our local businesses.”
The memorial rededication will take place at 11 a.m. May 31 amid the other Memorial Day events. Programs will take place at the following times and locations:
• 8 a.m., White Valley Cemetery, Roosevelt Avenue in Export
• 8:30 a.m., Murrysville Cemetery
• 9 a.m., Hill’s Church Road Cemetery
• 10 a.m., Twin Valley Cemetery, Athena Drive in Delmont
• 11 a.m., Export memorial dedication and parade, between Washington Avenue parking lot and the Westmoreland Heritage Trail. A parade through Export will follow, and events throughout the day will include the Franklin Regional Panther Marching Band, Murrysville Medic One, local fire departments and government dignitaries, Boy and Girl Scouts and clergy from local churches.
• Noon, Grandview Cemetery, Cemetery Road in Murrysville
• 1 p.m., honor roll at White Valley AMVETS, Carolina Street in Murrysville
