Memorial Day services set for weekend in Westmoreland
The following Memorial Day services are scheduled.
Hempfield
Greensburg Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 33 will conduct a program at 11 a.m. Monday at Westmoreland County Memorial Park. State Rep. Eric Nelson (R-Hempfield), a Marine Corps veteran, will be the guest speaker. A roll call will honor veterans recently interred at the site along West Newton Road.
Irwin
The annual Memorial Day parade in Irwin will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at Second and Main streets, proceed to Pennsylvania Avenue and end at Union Cemetery in North Huntingdon, where ceremonies will be held at the memorial.
Army Reserve Col. David Davis, a Norwin High School graduate, will make remarks during the ceremony at the veterans memorial in Union Cemetery, said Kory Bulloch, commander of the J. Howard Snyder Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 781 of North Huntingdon, which organizes the event.
The Irwin Male Chorus will perform at the ceremonies, and a bagpiper will play, as well, Bullock said.
A luncheon at the VFW Post on Billott Avenue will be held after the ceremonies.
The VFW Post is recruiting veterans to join the post, and those interested should bring their DD214 military service record.
Jeannette
The Jeannette Combined Veteran’s Honor Guard will meet at 9 a.m. Monday at city hall, 110 S. Second St.
Afterward, the group will travel to Sacred Heart Cemetery off Route 30, the Revolutionary gravestone in the alley between Margaret and First streets, Old Sacred Heart Cemetery by Grandview fire hall and Jeannette Memorial Park off Altman Road, where a ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. Most of the stops will include a prayer, cross or wreath placement, 21-gun salute and the playing of taps.
Manor-North Huntingdon
Norwin Historical Society, in association with Manor American Legion Post 472 Honor Guard, will conduct Memorial Day services at the following locations and times on Sunday:
• 11:30 a.m. at Brush Creek Cemetery, between Manor and Adamsburg, for Carl Leroy McKelvey, killed during World War I and American Legion Post 472 namesake
• 1 p.m. at Penn Lincoln Memorial Park, Route 30, North Huntingdon
• 2 p.m. at Brush Creek Associate Reformed Presbyterian Cemetery on Leger Road, North Huntingdon. Carl Huszar, president of Norwin Historical Society, James Drnjevich, an officer of the Trafford American Legion and William Bray, are scheduled to speak.
Manor American Legion will conduct the salute and the playing of taps.
Following the service, the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, John T. Crawford Camp 43, and the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Ruth F Barnhart Tent 56, will conduct a headstone rededication ceremony for 16 Civil War veterans buried in the cemetery.
The Blue and Gray Brigade will serve as honor guards stationed at each grave, with the Camp Chase Drum and Fife Corps providing the music.
Pennsylvania State Sr. Vice Commander William E. Fischer Jr. of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and Pennsylvania State President Linda Kao of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War will provide remarks. Biographies of the 16 veterans will be read.
A 35-star flag, which was the nation’s flag during the Civil War, will be presented to the eldest descendant of the veterans buried in the cemetery. Civil War reenactors will participate, as well.
Because of limited parking along Leger Road, a free shuttle bus will run from St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church on Leger Road to and from the cemetery.
• 3:15 p.m. at the Manor American Legion Post 472 Memorial Garden, 58 Race St., Manor.
Mt. Pleasant
VFW Post 3368 will sponsor the Memorial Day parade at 10:30 a.m. Monday, concluding with a ceremony at Veterans Park.
Murrysville-Export-Delmont
The White Valley AMVETS, along with American Legions in Export, Delmont and Murrysville, will sponsor Memorial Day ceremonies at local cemeteries and honor rolls throughout the community. They will take place at:
• 8 a.m., Export honor roll at borough war memorial, between Washington Avenue and the Westmoreland Heritage Trail.
• 8:30 a.m., Murrysville Cemetery, 3219 North Hills Rd., Murrysville
• 9 a.m., Hill’s Church Cemetery, 3618 Hills Church Rd., Murrysville
• 9:30 a.m., White Valley Cemetery, 5722 Roosevelt Ave., Export
• 10 a.m., Twin Valley Memorial Park, 483 Athena Drive, Delmont
• 10:45 a.m., parade through downtown Export
• 11:30 a.m., Grandview Cemetery, Cemetery Lane, Murrysville
• 12:15 p.m., honor roll at White Valley AMVETS Post 85, 2100 Carolina St., Murrysville
Members of the Franklin Regional Senior High School Marching Band, local fire, police and EMS, local political dignitaries, clergy and Boy and Girl Scouts also will take part in the ceremonies.
Patriot Park, Somerset County
A memorial ceremony is planned at Patriot Park, near the Flight 93 National Memorial, at 3 p.m. Sunday.
The event will include speakers, music and the dedication of a new storyboard at the park that is being constructed to honor those who fought and died in the global war on terror.
Unity-Youngstown
The Youngstown-Whitney Volunteer Fire Department will host two Memorial Day services Monday: 9 a.m. at the Baggaley Honor Roll in Unity and 10 a.m. at Brody Park in Youngstown. The invocation, homily and benediction will be conducted by the Rev. James Podlesny of Youngstown’s Sacred Heart Church. Taps will be played by Rob Porembka. Wreaths will be laid by fire department members.
Scottdale
A ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. at Veterans Park with presentations and a performance by Southmoreland High School marching band.
West Newton
The third annual free Patriotic Concert featuring the performance of patriotic music will be at 6 p.m. Sunday at the West Newton gymnasium, 113 S. Fifth St.
Doors open at 5 p m., and the group “Back Roads” will start playing at 6 p.m.
Those attending can bring a chair or sit in the bleachers.
