The Fifth Annual Mike Reese Memorial 5K —Roast, Run and Family Fun Event is scheduled Saturday at Mammoth Park in Mt. Pleasant Township.
The event honoring the late state lawmaker is a fundraiser benefiting a memorial fund bearing his name. The fund provides scholarships to high school graduates and athletes participating in travel team programs, as well as grants to athletic organizations for equipment and capital improvements.
Reese was 42 when he died in January 2021 of an apparent brain aneurysm. He served 12 years in the state House of Representatives and had been elected to his seventh term in office in November 2020. He represented Westmoreland and Somerset County residents in the 59th Legislative District.
The 5K starts at 10 a.m. and registration begins an hour before. Lunch and entertainment begins at 11:30 in Pavilion 1.
The cost, which includes both the race and lunch, is $50 for anyone over 21 and $25 for people younger than 21. To register, visit runsignup.com/Race/PA/MountPleasant/MikeReeseMemorial5K.
Funds have been awarded for construction of dugouts, upgrades to playing fields and the purchase of equipment for youth sports programs in Mt. Pleasant, Latrobe, Hempfield and Ligonier, according to organizers. Special Olympics athletes have also gotten support through the memorial fund.
