Model planes signal approach of Westmoreland air show

The model airplanes will be on display to promote the upcoming Shop n’ Save Westmoreland County Air Show that opens the weekend of May 25 at Arnold Palmer Regional Airport.

Members of the Laurel Highlands Model Airplane Club arranged a display of model planes Friday at Greensburg’s East Pittsburgh Street Shop ‘n Save supermarket. It’s the second year for the display, which promotes the Westmoreland County Airshow that the grocery chain sponsors.

This year’s models are based on World War II planes, in keeping with the “Tora, Tora, Tora” Pearl Harbor simulation that will be a highlight of the air show May 25 and 26 at Arnold Palmer Regional Airport in Unity.

Both the club and the supermarket will have ground-based displays at the air show. The club will showcase a variety of its members’ model aircraft. Shop ‘n Save’s exhibit will include NASCAR race cars, dragsters and a vehicle billed as the world’s largest and fastest grocery cart — with a 360 hp motor and a capacity of 160 bags of groceries.

Discounted air show tickets are available in advance, for $15, at participating Shop ‘n Save locations.

Shop ‘n Save plans to make a donation to the Feherty’s Troops First Foundation, which helps service members who were wounded in Iraq or Afghanistan. The public can help by contributing through the supermarket’s Earn Your Wings campaign or purchasing raffle tickets at the air show.
