A Monessen couple were arraigned Wednesday on animal neglect and cruelty charges after police say they abandoned two pit bulls inside their home without food and water for “possibly weeks.”

Daniel W. Brewer, 34, and wife Karen, 33, of Linden Avenue, were charged with two counts each of aggravated cruelty to animals causing serious bodily injury, animal cruelty and animal neglect.

The couple remain in Westmoreland County Prison after each failed to post $500 bail.

In an unrelated case, Daniel Brewer has been an inmate at the county jail since May 10 after he was charged that day with resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, according to online records. Karen Brewer has been jailed since June 16 on a charge of retail theft in another unrelated case. They were unable to post bond for those charges.

The dogs were discovered Monday locked inside a bedroom and were “very weak and having trouble going to the bathroom,” Officer Chris Gray said. One of the animals, a white pit bull, was described by Gray in very bad condition with “her ribs protruding through its fur and appeared to be a very unhealthy weight.”

Gray said Daniel Brewer’s mother, Lori Essey, went to the police station about noon Monday to report her concerns that no one was taking care of the couple’s two dogs. Neighbors told police they had not seen either Brewer there in weeks.

“The dogs appeared to be in poor health, have not eaten or drank in days, possibly weeks. The dogs were locked in a bedroom that had no food or water access,” Gray said in court documents. “Dog feces was everywhere throughout the bedroom. The room was very unlivable for anyone or anything.”

The dogs were turned over to All But Furgotten Humane Rescue in North Huntingdon which plans to get them veterinary care and put them up for adoption. The rescue posted photographs of the dogs on its website Wednesday https://www.allbutfurgotten.com/

A preliminary hearing is scheduled June 28.
