Here are a few morning news items from across the region for Wednesday, July 2:
Police release video in fatal McKeesport shooting seeking tips
Allegheny County Police released surveillance video and new details about a June 2024 fatal shooting in McKeesport in hopes of getting tips about the identities of two people and the driver of a getaway car.
Bryant Boyd, 64, of Duquesne was fatally shot June 13, 2024, as he left Cal’s Cantina on Eden Park Boulevard at 12:40 a.m. Police believe Boyd was not the intended target of the shooting.
Surveillance video from the bar released by investigators showed two people walking in the parking lot with guns and then getting into a maroon Chevrolet Malibu.
The video showed the two people run toward Boyd as he left the building. The shooters left in the Chevy. Police said Boyd was shot multiple times. The Chevy was recovered a few hours later in North Versailles. It had been reported a week earlier from McKeesport.
Anyone with information is asked to call the County Police Tip Line 1-833-255-8477 (ALL-TIPS). Callers can remain anonymous.
Derry Borough takes action on pool hours, lifeguard pay
Derry Borough council voted Tuesday night to keep the community pool closed on Mondays during the summer after officials have been contending with a shortage of lifeguards. Council also approved pay increases for lifeguards, according to a news release.
“A lot of communities are losing their pool, we didn’t want to add to that statistic, so we’re doing everything that we possibly can to make that happen,” said Councilman Nathan Bundy told Trib news partner WTAE. “But we realize we cannot have a pool without our lifeguards, so we need to step up for them as well.”
Pay will range from $10.50 to $13.50 per hour based on experience and job duties. Community donations allowed the borough to offer reimbursement for lifeguard certification costs.
A lack of lifeguards prompted officials to unexpectedly close the pool to the public for a few days last month. Officials previously told the Trib the pool is typically covered by three lifeguards for up to 50 people in the water. Each additional 25 swimmers requires one more lifeguard.
Pass holders can seek refunds as a result of the closure on Mondays. Anyone who keeps their pass will get 10% off of all concessions for the rest of the season, according to the news release.
