A Mt. Pleasant man apparently suffered a “medical event” as he was exiting Toll Route 66 in Hempfield Tuesday and crashed into a toll booth, state police said.

Kenneth G. Hamlin, 65, was airlifted to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Oakland with serious injuries after the 6:35 p.m. crash at the exit at Route 136, according to state police at New Stanton.

Trooper Daniel Fagan reported that Hamlin was exiting the highway “when he appeared to lose consciousness due to a medical condition upon approaching a toll booth.”

Hamlin’s 2016 Nissan Altima struck a light tower and concrete safety barrier before hitting a toll booth canopy.

Fagan said Hamlin had to be extricated from his car by personnel from New Stanton and Midway-St. Clair fire departments. He was initially treated at the scene by paramedics from Mutual Aid Ambulance before being airlifted to the Oakland hospital, troopers said.
