A Mt. Pleasant man died after a kitchen fire trapped him in his apartment, according the Westmoreland County coroner.

Emergency crews were called to the 200 block of West Smithfield Street in Mt. Pleasant at 11:45 p.m. Saturday when a neighbor reported smoke from next door.

Westmoreland County Coroner Tim Carson said what appeared to be an accidental grease fire caused Thaddeus A. Peckyno, 69, to become trapped in a back bedroom.

Mt. Pleasant and Scottdale firefighters were able to reach Peckyno and get him out of the apartment. He was taken by ambulance to Independence Health Frick Hospital but became unresponsive and died at 12:46 a.m. Sunday, Carson said.

A state police fire marshal is investigating.
