A Mt. Pleasant Township woman is accused by state police of causing a deep cut on a 2-year-old boy’s cheek, according to court papers.

Ashley Marie Myers, 31, is charged with aggravated assault and child endangerment.

Troopers were notified in a ChildLine report that the boy was taken to UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh on Feb. 7 for treatment of the cut “with no plausible explanation for injury” given by Myers, according to court papers.

Myers told troopers during an interview five days later that the child awoke from a nap with the injury, according to police. Before paramedics took him to the hospital, she took a photograph of the child’s face. Police said the cut was not bleeding and the child was not crying in the picture.

A hospital doctor told investigators that the child would have been bleeding and crying at the time of the injury and when Myers called 911. It was unclear from court papers how the injury happened.

“While these are very serious allegations, we intend on vigorously defending against these charges,” said attorney Matt Schimizzi.

Myers is free on $75,000 unsecured bail. A March 3 preliminary hearing is set.
