Route 30 eastbound reopened near the Route 119 interchange after a crash early Thursday evening shut it down for hours.
The 5:30 p.m. wreck involved multiple vehicles, according to a Westmoreland County 911 dispatcher. Southwest Greensburg firefighters reported in a social media post that the crash involved a tri-axle truck and a passenger vehicle.
Photos from the scene indicated the crash happened in the area of the on-ramp from Route 119 to Route 30 east.
State police said in a news release issued Saturday that Robert D. Waffle, 47, of Latrobe, was driving a Honda Pilot when he left the highway and hit two vehicles that were on the on-ramp waiting to merge into traffic. The SUV sideswiped a Ram 2500 and rear ended a tri-axle before spinning and colliding with the center median.
The other two drivers were not hurt. Waffle was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, troopers said.
Firefighters reported that when they got to the scene, a nurse who had been traveling in the area was performing CPR on one of the drivers. The driver was revived with help from first responders and taken to a hospital in critical condition, according to the social media post.
“Thank you to all responding personnel and to the bystander whose quick action made a difference,” the post said.
Southwest Greensburg, South Greensburg and Greensburg firefighters were among emergency crews responding. The road reopened around 9:40 p.m.
State police had not released information regarding the wreck.
