Westmoreland City Fire Department sent a truck to help ventilate Murrysville’s Dick’s Diner on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2023 after people inside complained of a burning sensation affecting their eyes.

At least 20 customers and employees were evacuated from Dick’s Diner in Murrysville on Saturday afternoon after customers complained of a burning sensation affecting their eyes.

The incident happened at the restaurant along Route 22 shortly before 1 p.m.

General manager Erik Retzer said 911 was called when the ill effects occurred. Firefighters from Murrysville, Export and Westmoreland City responded along with an ambulance crew from Murrysville Medic One.

Murrysville fire Chief Pat O’Mahony said crews ventilated the building. The odor was ultimately tracked to a chemical which had spilled in the restaurant’s basement, fire officials said.

“Everyone’s OK, and that’s what matters,” Retzer said.

No one was taken by ambulance for treatment.
