Murrysville recreation planning 'Egg My Yard' event for Easter
Vaccination rates may be ramping up across Pennsylvania, but when it comes to Easter, there’s no concrete way to know what the situation will be, especially for larger social events such as egg hunts.
With that in mind, Murrysville Recreation Department officials are bringing the hunt to families with “Egg Your Yard.”
“Last year, we changed up the egg hunt a little bit (because of the covid situation), and unfortunately that got canceled,” said Amy Wengrzyn, recreation program director. “We did some research and discovered that this ‘egg my yard’ concept was really successful in a lot of communities.”
Families can register to have their yard “egged,” with recreation officials hiding eggs from March 29 to April 1. Easter is April 4.
The cost varies from $10 for 20 eggs up to $40 for 100 eggs.
Select eggs will include prizes that can be redeemed at local businesses.
“I have a friend who does recreation work in Florida,” Wengrzyn said. “They did something similar at Halloween that went really well.”
Murrysville Recreation Department Director Carly Greene said this new format not only allows for better control over health and safety, but also makes the whole event a little easier to organize.
“A lot of times in the past, the egg hunt got so much attendance that without enough volunteers and staffing, they became unmanageable,” she said. “Then covid came and sort of forced us into this direction.”
Murrysville Mayor Regis Synan said he couldn’t be happier to have a recreation department willing to innovate.
“Even prior to the pandemic, Carly and Amy never cease to amaze me with their creative ideas,” Synan said. “And in the middle of that pandemic, their ability to improvise programs and come up with this is really great.”
Families who register will be provided with a date and estimated time for the “egging.” The deadline to register is Feb. 26. The promotion is open to families living within the Franklin Regional School District, and registration is open to the first 100 families who sign up.
