Between the Olympics and the Super Bowl, this is a big weekend for all types of sports fans. But for those who aren’t interested — or those who need a break — this is a big weekend for events in Westmoreland County, too. Here are a few options.
‘Chicago: The Musical’
One of the most successful musicals in Broadway history — and the source of one of the most acclaimed musical movies in decades — will be performed at the Lamp Theatre in Irwin this weekend.
“Chicago: The Musical” brings the audience into the world of Jazz Age Chicago, unfolding a tale of murder, music and manipulation. With exhilarating musical numbers such as “All That Jazz” and “Cell Block Tango,” this Split Stage Productions show will thrill any theatergoer.
Performances will be held at 8 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Lamp Theatre, 222 Main St., Irwin. There will also be performances next weekend. Tickets are $30 each. Get yours at lamptheatre.org.
Sunday Fun Day at the Westmoreland
Do you “heart” art? Head to the Westmoreland Museum of American Art on Sunday to take part in free activities and see what’s going on in the galleries.
This Valentine’s Day-themed event for all ages will include a Valentine-making station, candy lei decorating, all-ages karaoke from DJ Savvy Sounds, tasty food options, community partner tables and more. Don’t forget to take a stroll around the museum and check out the “Steel Valley Visions” immersive installation experience.
The free event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Westmoreland Museum of American Art, 221 N. Main St., Greensburg. Register at thewestmoreland.org.
‘Godspell’
This smash-hit Biblical musical by Carnegie Mellon University grad Stephen Schwartz is a timeless favorite, but see the 2012 revised edition from Greensburg Civic Theatre this weekend. The new version includes fresh references and arrangements layered onto well-known songs including “Day By Day.”
The show is a series of parables and conversations between Jesus and his followers, interjected with memorable tunes in a variety of styles.
Performances will be held at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Greensburg Garden and Civic Center, 951 Old Salem Road, Greensburg. Tickets are $23 for adults, $21 for seniors and $18 for students. To learn more and buy tickets, visit gctheatre.org.
Galentine’s Day
Popularized by sitcom “Parks and Recreation,” the concept of Galentine’s Day brings together female friends for a day of fun and camaraderie before Valentine’s Day proper. This weekend, downtown Irwin will have a day for the ladies to celebrate.
Head to the borough to visit your favorite spots for brunch or lunch, then spend the day shopping, eating and strolling with your best gals. Businesses will offer various specials throughout the day. There will also be hidden hearts around the area, and if you find one and bring it to Feathers Gift Shop, you’ll get something special.
The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. To learn more, visit facebook.com/irwinshopcrawl.
