There are plenty of hotly-debated aspects of the covid-19 pandemic, but one that seems to have been embraced by most people is the notion that being outside is a healthy, relatively low-risk behavior.

No one is happier about that than Susan Miller of Plum, who recently resumed her monthly outdoor nature series at the Roberts Trailhead in Murrysville and who is organizing a self-guided tour of the wetlands at Murrysville Community Park on Saturday, June 27.

“Individuals and small groups can walk the trail and see the new educational signs,” Miller said. “We’re also going to show the purple martin babies, and we’ll have folks sit or stand apart. People can bring a mask if they wish.”

The first of Miller’s trailhead nature programs was May 31.

“It went really well,” she said. “It was a small group, but I caught a couple frogs, tadpoles, and a Northern dusky salamander to show.”

There is no cost to attend the programs.

The self-guided wetlands tour will be at 10 a.m., June 27 at the park, on Wiestertown Road.

Here’s the schedule for the trailhead nature programs, which will focus on local flora and fauna and take place at the Roberts Trailhead, 4301 William Penn Highway on these Sundays:

• June 28: Birds

• July 26: Mammals

• Aug. 30: Butterflies

• Sept. 27: Wildflowers

• Oct. 25: Trees

Registration is requested.

To register for one of the programs, go to Murrysville.com and click on “Free Wildlife Programs” under the “Programs & Events” menu.
