A New Alexandria man was arrested by state troopers, accused of breaking into a woman’s home and assaulting and choking her.

Kevin D. Kelly, 48, is charged by state police with harassment, simple assault, strangulation, driving on a license suspended for driving under the influence and operating a vehicle without an ignition interlock system.

The Salem woman reported she was awakened about 8:30 a.m. Sunday after Kelly drove his pickup truck up her driveway on Chicka Road, hit her fence and got out of his vehicle.

The woman told Trooper Anthony Baum that Kelly walked around to a rear door of her house “and kicked it in,” began choking her and threatened to kill her before fleeing.

“I observed redness to the woman’s neck,” Baum wrote in court documents.

The woman also provided troopers with numerous threatening texts sent to her cell phone Saturday and Sunday before the alleged attack.

Kelly was located late Sunday and arrested by troopers. He was arraigned Monday and ordered held in the county prison on $50,000 bond. He was released Tuesday after hiring a bail bondsman.

According to court records, Kelly has numerous driving under the influence convictions dating back to 2000 in Greene County, resulting in his driving restrictions.

He could not be reached for comment and an attorney was not listed in court documents.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled Nov. 30.
