Traffic and pedestrians cross Clay Avenue in downtown Jeannette.

Jeannette plans to add a new garbage truck to its fleet.

Council recently approved the $331,000 purchase to replace an aging truck.

“I think it’s to the point now where it has become a necessity,” city manager Ethan Keedy told council.

When it is received, the truck will be put on a commercial route. The city could be looking at buying a second new truck in the next couple years, Keedy said. One of the existing trucks in the fleet has had close to $40,000 worth of maintenance so far this year.

The cost for the new truck will be paid out of the capital reserve account and then the city will repay itself over 10 years. That amounts to a payment of about $33,000 per year, he said.
