North Huntingdon property owners will not pay more in real estate taxes to operate township government in 2020.

With little fanfare or discussion, the North Huntingdon commissioners on Wednesday passed a $14.7 million general fund budget that keeps taxes at 11.3 mills.

The revenue generated by 9.3 mills will be allocated to the general fund. An additional one mill is set aside for the capital improvement fund and another mill goes toward the township’s fire departments.

To balance the 2020 budget, the township will transfer $2.2 million from its reserve fund.

In a budget-related matter, the commissioners accepted a $14,000 grant from the Westmoreland County District Attorney’s investigative fund No. 2 to pay for a new police dog, and to train the dog’s handler, Officer Jeremy Nichols.

Nichols’ current police dog, Nero, is retiring at the end of the year after eight years in service in the township.

Nichols plans to get a new dog from Shallow Creek Kennels near Sharpsville, Mercer County, and undergo training with it early next year.
