The 2020 “Parking Lot Bash and Car Cruise” held outside of Norvelt Fire Hall in Mt. Pleasant Township. The 3rd annual event will be held noon to 7 p.m. Saturday at the fire station on Mt. Pleasant Road.

A fundraiser that started during the coronavirus pandemic has caught on for Norvelt Volunteer Fire Department.

Firefighters opted in 2020 to forego an indoor fall purse bash for a Parking Lot Bash and Car Cruise, a decision which proved fruitful, according to Fire Chief Matt Zelenak. The outdoor option provided a way for people to gather without restrictions related to the pandemic.

“It pretty much replaced the purse bash with the funds,” he said.

The activities will start Saturday at noon and run until 7 p.m. with free admission at the department’s station at 2325 Mt. Pleasant Road in Mt. Pleasant Township. There will be prize giveaways all day and food and drink available for purchase.

The car cruise will run from noon to 4 p.m. and a performance from band Back in Time will start at 3 p.m.

Zelenak said the event played host to 200 classic cars annually in its first two years. Participants in the cruise can enter with a donation to the department.

“We hope to see that many this year,” he said.

Attendees can buy tickets for about two dozen prize giveaways, which will include a meat package, guns, purses, lottery tickets, cash and a grill, among other items. All of the prizes will be on display.

Zelenak said support from the local community for the event as well as others outside the area has been great. Attendees can bring chairs and tents but not outside food or drink. Food vendors will be selling hoagies, pizza, barbecue and sandwiches.
