Norwin advertises for new superintendent

The Norwin School Board has launched a search for an experienced superintendent to replace William Kerr, who is retiring June 30.

The school district seeks someone who has a doctorate in education, administration or related field, as well as five years of central office experience, according to an advertisement placed for the position. The board wants someone who has experience in staff and budget development, as well as overall district operations.

The board intends to consider both internal and external candidates, Barbara Viola, board president, said prior to Monday’s board meeting. The school board hopes to have a superintendent hired by May, although that person may not be in a position to work at Norwin at that time, Viola said.

Natalie McCracken, assistant superintendent for elementary education, has her doctorate degree. Timothy Kotch, assistant superintendent for secondary education, had submitted his resignation, effective the end of the school year.

The school district has cast a wide net for a superintendent. In addition to the Tribune-Review, the notice has been sent to education organizations such as the Pennsylvania Association of School Business Officials, Pa-Educator.Net and the official electronic mail service for the state Department of Education.

Kerr announced in November plans to retire at the end of June, which is one year before his current contract expires. He has been a superintendent for 25 years — serving in Norwin since 2010 — and will receive a salary of $171,545 this school year.

The money the school district saves by Kerr’s early retirement will allow for restructuring and realigning administration opportunities, the board said in November.

Kerr’s retirement notice was subject to final acceptance and approval by the board. In September, the board announced it was planning to offer central office administrators, principals and assistant principals an early retirement incentive.
