Flutists perform as part of the Norwin High School Marching Band’s show “Harvest” during a special send-off show for the community at Norwin Knights Stadium at Norwin Senior High School, prior to the national competition.

The Norwin High School Band can rightfully lay claim to bragging rights as a champion among bands from across the country that competed this weekend in Indianapolis.

The local marching band placed first in the semifinals competition in its class at the Bands of America Grand National Championships at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. The band also captured first place for visual performance on Saturday of its show, “Harvest.”

The schools are divided by class — as determined by the number of students — for the Bands of America competition.

The band also had captured first place in the preliminary rounds and was awarded first place for its outstanding music performance, according to the Bands of America website.

The band returned home early Sunday morning, a spokesman said.
