Norwin School District cafeteria workers agreed to a one-year extension of their current contract, which will provide members with a 40-cent-an-hour wage hike, while maintaining benefits.

The school board this week approved the extension with the Service Employees International Union, which represents 54 cafeteria workers — 20 full-time employees as well as 34 part-time employees, who work fewer than six hours per day, the district said.

The extension, which runs through June 30, 2021, was advisable due to the current pandemic, which has created many unknowns and has significantly impacted school cafeteria funds, said Superintendent Jeff Taylor. The cafeteria fund is a separate fund from the school district’s general fund.

“This one-year extension provides us with some extra time to see how we weather the storm of the pandemic and its impact on our cafeteria fund,” Taylor said.

The cafeteria workers will see a $2 per pay increase in their co-pay for their health insurance, raisning it to $37 per pay.

Sam Williamson, leader of 32BJ SEIU’s Western Pennsylvania district, said the union looks forward to begin bargaining on a new agreement as soon as possible.
