Norwin foundation sets Days of Giving for school homecoming
A nonprofit foundation that supports Norwin School District’s educational programs, sports, activities and scholarships hopes to raise $7,500 during its annual Days of Giving, which will be held Oct. 13 to 17 in conjunction with the high school’s homecoming week.
The Norwin School District Community Foundation met its $7,500 goal last year even with covid restrictions placed on homecoming activities. Much of the money — $5,000 — came from one donor, said John “Jack” Boylan, president of the foundation and a former Norwin superintendent.
The foundation has been conducting its Annual Days of Giving for about four years, Boylan said.
“It’s the one real focused fundraiser that we do. This is the one time we reach out to the community,” he said.
The foundation, with its many scholarship funds, was able to distribute $119,000 to 2021 Norwin graduates through about 34 scholarships, Boylan said.
The foundation wants to grow its smallest scholarship endowment funds, Boylan said, so students who earn these scholarships will receive greater financial support as they begin their post-high-school education. These scholarships provide awards in the range of $400-$500, which might cover only the cost of several college textbooks.
The foundation also wants to increase its Norwin Alumni and Friends Association Scholarship. Those who want to add money to any scholarship facilitated by the foundation can find a listing of eligible scholarships on its website at nsdcf.org/programs/scholarships.
The group wants to provide more money for Norwin’s K-12 Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics program to provide students and teachers with the specialized STEM curricular resources needed to support STEM instruction.
The foundation also wants to provide money for Educator Innovation Grants, a competitive program to provide startup funds for teachers to provide innovative instruction to enrich and enhance student learning. Money also is needed to support Norwin athletics, activities, fine arts and the newly created Playground Project Funds.
Donors can target their donations to the area they want to support.
Those who want to donate by check are asked to make the check payable to the Norwin School District Community Foundation and send it to 281 McMahon Dr., North Huntingdon, PA 15642.
